The Faculty of Fine Arts in Ghent is one of the oldest in Belgium and was endowed with the title of royal in 1771. Today, this faculty of University College Ghent is a trendsetter educating prominent artists, film makers and designers and offers the most complete and universal range of artistic educations in Flanders. We educate specialists in every domain of art and design, which gives the Faculty of Fine Arts a diversity that brings about a mutual stimulation between the various domains.
The bulk of the art students go in for a bachelor & master of Art Design. This option offers a great variety of specialization possibilities. Students can choose for a thorough education in disciplines such as fashion, textile design, drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design and graphic arts, performance, photography, illustration, video & interactive media, web-design,…

A thorough technical and artistic education within one discipline is broadened with a pedagogic openness towards other tracks, which allows the various disciplines to each make their contribution to the education of the student. Design is stimulated by a coexistence with the fine arts. For us, ‘autonomous design’ is not a contradiction, but an inspiring area of tension: the designer works with the attitude of an autonomous artist. The master course program of visual arts is given in workshops where the students are stimulated and coached, rather than given direction. Your own master project largely determines the programme and therefore its result as well.
In the bachelor & master of Audio-Visual Arts there is the choice between film and animation film at the very beginning of the course programme.
The film department gives a global training to become a filmmaker. Therefore, we do not draw a sharp line between fiction and documentary, film and video, between the technical and artistic component. We do not turn out directors, scenarists or producers in the strict sense of the word, but personal filmmakers. This is what makes this course program unique in Flanders.
Our animation film department was the first one of its kind in Europe and remains an international point of reference. An animation film is composed image per image. Classical media such as drawing, with a pencil and pen as well as a computer, take an important part in the animation film making process. The film and animation film workshops are completely digitally equipped, as are the photography workshops.
The three-year course program of bachelor of Interior Design trains the students in designing, and giving advice in and realizing the design of private and public spaces. The course program emphasizes technical knowledge as well as artistic design competencies. Students familiarize themselves with the working field through projects and an internship. Our graduates are able to combine aesthetics, functionality and safety in a design, advice or realization practice.
