Study programmes

Having regard to the provisions of the Decree of October 2004 concerning Higher Education Structures in Flanders, University College Ghent now offers the following types of degrees:

Professional Bachelors

These practice-oriented study programmes, such as Office Management, Nursing and Teacher Training, prepare the student directly for specific professions in industry, education, commerce, health, etc. A professional Bachelor consists of 180 ECTS credits, which corresponds to a traditional three-year curriculum.

Professional Bachelor degrees, moreover, do not exclude access to subsequent degrees. A number of professional Bachelors give access to advanced Bachelor programmes (min. 60 ECTS credits), and a limited number of professional Bachelors may even grant access to a Master programme on condition that a bridging programme is undertaken first.

Academic Bachelors

These programmes prepare the student directly for a Master degree, but can also be validated on the labour market. An academic Bachelor is 180 ECTS credits, which corresponds to a traditional three-year curriculum.

Academic Bachelors grant direct access to the corresponding Master. In some cases, however, access is conditional and the student will have to undertake a preparatory programme first, i.e. when the student does not have the right Bachelor degree to be admitted to a specific Master programme.

Academic Bachelors can also enrol for an advanced Bachelor.

Masters

These study programmes are the continuation of the corresponding academic Bachelor, and are occasionally open to professional Bachelors as well.

Academic Bachelors have direct access to the corresponding Master and indirect access (via a preparatory programme) in other cases. Access for professional Bachelors is restricted and conditional.

Masters are usually 60 ECTS credits and correspond to a traditional one-year curriculum (exceptions such as “Master of Music” are 120 ECTS credits or two traditional years).

A Master will gave access to an advanced Master and/or Ph.D.

Professional Bachelors are offered at university colleges only.

Academic Bachelors and Master degrees are offered both at universities and at university colleges associated with universities.
