Welcome to University College Ghent!

Dear colleague
Dear student

I am very pleased to welcome you to University College Ghent, the largest hogeschool (university college) in Belgium in terms of budget, staff and student population. We are particularly proud to have the widest range of subjects on offer, in fact almost everything from the fine arts to engineering sciences, and from music to biotechnology. Our goal is to link, mix and interconnect this formidable range of assets to create surplus value in the fields of education, research and development of the arts.

University College Ghent offers students an international learning environment with a wide variety of higher education level studies. We cooperate with numerous European colleagues and institutions, but are also heavily involved in initiatives and projects in developing countries. This international cooperation is carried out in the fields of student and teacher mobility, as well as in curriculum development and  research.

We are situated in Flanders’ most popular student city Ghent, which was chosen twice as 'the most enjoyable city of Flanders’, namely in 2005 and in 2006. Every year Ghent attracts over 55,000 students for higher education studies, which effectively makes it the higher education capital of Flanders.

This website offers a fresh perspective on University College Ghent as it is today and its evolution since its establishment in 1995. Moreover, it also discusses the history of some of its faculties, as for example that of the Faculty of Fine Arts, which was established as early as in 1751, and that of the Faculty of Music and Drama set up in 1835. We have attempted to describe our institution within these pages, and the following chapters should give you an overview of the vast array of opportunities here.

I hope you are inspired by our website and especially by what our university college has to offer its students. On behalf of all staff, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you. We are looking forward to meeting you in Ghent!

Best regards

Dr. Robert Hoogewijs
